Nearly 3 years ago, Bill, co-founder of Alex + Abby, suffered a massive stroke. Doctors told him he was lucky to have survived, but the stroke left him in pretty bad shape. Before the stroke, Bill was fit, active and very social. He was an avid cyclist who routinely rode 50 miles in a day. But after the stroke he couldn’t walk or talk.
Bill faced a long road to recovery. It was crucial to begin rehab right away. So his family searched for the specialized therapy he required and discovered St. Luke’s Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) fit Bill’s needs - plus it was right here in Iowa.
Bill went through acute stroke rehab at St. Luke’s PM&R where he received physical, occupational and speech therapy for several hours each day with 24-hour care. Afterward, he continued recovery with months of outpatient therapy. Thanks to the skill and care of therapists, doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s PM&R as well as Bill’s hard work and tenacity, he regained the ability to walk. We celebrate his accomplishments! He's now enjoying retirement.

The St. Luke's Foundation is raising money for aquatic therapy equipment. This innovative therapy involves a specialized treadmill submerged in an accessible, freestanding tank of water. Water buoyancy supports the patient’s bodyweight making it possible for them to safely stand and walk despite muscle weakness and diminished motor skills. Water resistance can also be used to strengthen weak muscles.
